Thai Kitchen

Long time, no Muncie Experiences! Finals and Winter Break is over, which means we can dive right back into our Muncie Experiences!

I love this place so much that I forgot to take pictures of my food before I ate it! I'm speaking of Thai Kitchen, located at 1413 Walnut St. This place is a total dive, a hole in the wall, the parking lot--which might not even belong to the restaurant--has room for maybe five cars. Once you walk in, you see that the restaurant is divided into two sections. The front has tables and chairs which can be pulled together to seat large groups, and the back, which is filled with booths and a bar that you can sit at. The bar has a huge TV behind it, where a documentary on various South Asian countries plays. It has a kitschy feel, complete with fish tank full of giant goldfish. There is hardly anyone there, so it's a pretty peaceful dining experience.

The menu itself is extensive, and there is a variety of Thai food to have. They have a fantastic curry menu, but the various curries are spread throughout the menu, some under the dinner specials, and some grouped with the Stews.  On this visit, I, Dani, got the red curry with beef, and Andrew got the cashew pork. We also got curry puffs as an appetizer. On previous trips, I've gotten the yellow curry with chicken, and Andrew got a peanut dish, which was like eating peanut butter on rice. We've also gotten the fresh spring rolls, which are really good, and a must-try. The food comes promptly, and it is delicious. The curry puffs are potato and corn and other veggies with a curry flavor, wrapped in a flaky shell. Along with the curry puffs a sweet dipping sauce is served, which really makes the puffs amazing.

The food itself is really good and filling. All of it is cheap (my curry was less than $6) and in a perfect portion size. They don't give you a ton of food, but just enough to have you walk away satisfied. The curry comes on a 1-10 spiciness scale, with one being the least spicy, and 10 being the most. I'm a wimp and got a two, which was plenty spicy for me. Each dish is served with rice, and you can ask for more rice, which I always do. The meat is well cooked,  and Andrew's pork was really good. By the end of the meal, my mouth felt pleasantly on fire (like I said, wimp) and nearly everything on both our plates was gone. Overall, the combined bill was a little more than $17, including the two entrées, appetizer, and waters.

Overall, Thai Kitchen is one of our go-to places when we get a craving for good, wholesome, Thai food. The food is filling, spicy, and traditional. The staff is really nice, too. The waitresses are friendly and check on you often and you can usually see the elderly Thai couple in the back actually making your food. And you can't beat the price. While there are two other places to get your Thai fix in Muncie (Thai Smile on Tillotson, and a new one on Main St) Thai Kitchen is worth the venture into South Muncie. You'll love the experience, I'm sure.

Pictures when we get some!

Carter's Hot Dogs

I would first like to start this off  by saying, if you have not gone to Carter's, cancel all your plans for Friday or Saturday night around midnight, and go to the Village.

Carter's, located in the Village across the street from Greeks, on University, is only open on the weekends, and from around Midnight to whenever. Carter's is simple: it's a hot dog stand. Formally known as Carter's Nearly World Famous Hot Dogs, it has been listed as number 51 of Sport's Illustrated's "100 Things You Gotta Do Before You Graduate (No Matter the Cost)".

Carter's sells hot dogs, as well as brats, and you can get anything from a plain hot dog to a chili-cheese dog, to anything in between. Prices start at $1 a hot dog, so it is very inexpensive, and, being located in the Village, is close to campus, off-campus housing, and the bars. It's nothing fancy, just a silver hot dog stand with a giant Pepsi umbrella over it, and the menu is written in Sharpie on a piece of cardboard.

The hot dogs? Really good. And be sure to ask for red or yellow on your hot dog, not ketchup or mustard. They are fresh, warm, and come wrapped in some foil. Prefect for something to eat when you have a late-night craving after partying, or want something fun to do with your friends. As for me, Dani, my personal favorite is a hot dog with red. I don't like my hot dogs fancy, but everyone tells me I need to try the chili-cheese sometime. Andrew prefers his hot dogs with red, yellow, and some cheese.

A bag full of Carter's with our friend, Ross!

The line can be long, especially on nights were the weather is nice, or weekends with events, but it is worth the wait. Carter himself is really nice, and you'll meet some really interesting people. And if you lose a quarter, you might be able to convince the guy in front of you in line to pay for your hot dogs.

Having a Carter's hot dog is something every BSU student needs to do before they graduate. No question.

Thanksgiving

While this doesn't really have much to do with Muncie, I just wanted to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy plenty of good food. There's no other excuse like today to eat as much as you want.

Sunshine Cafe

For our first blog/review, we decided to visit the Sunshine Cafe! It was the first time either of us had been there, and overall, we really enjoyed it.

Sunshine Cafe is located on Oakwood, not too far off campus, which is good for BSU students. They have an extensive menu, with breakfast being served 24/7. It's a cute little place, which reminds you of a Mom and Pop restaurant, with the old music from the 60s to boot. The waitresses were really nice, and overall, it was really clean.

Hey, this is Andrew speaking. Even though they serve breakfast all the time, I'm not one to get that kind of thing unless it really is for breakfast (and even then not so much- eggs are overused), so I decided to get a classic dinner. I ordered the Southern Fried Catfish which came with two sides, in this case I got mac & cheese and rice. When it came out (which wasn't too long) it all looked pretty good. The fish had a definite spice to it but it was good for the price I paid (and the amount I got!). I was kinda disappointed with the mac & cheese and rice. The macaroni tasted sorta like it was a frozen entrée heated, and the rice tasted like Lipton instant rice in a bag, or something like that. Don't get me wrong, they were good, but when you eat out, you expect it to taste like it didn't come from Walmart. Also, I had tried to order a cherry coke, but they only had "regular coke." Not surprising, but don't most places just make a cherry coke with the cherry syrup? I think that tastes a lot better, actually, but it's rare I'm denied a Cherry Coke, so, take that however you want. Overall, for almost $10 my fish dinner was a fair deal despite some questionable sides. Next time I'll get the mashed potatoes and salad instead.

After much deliberation over the menu, I, Dani, got breakfast! I had the Supreme Three Egg Omelet, which came with your choice of hash browns or grits (hash browns), and a side of toast, pancakes, or biscuits (biscuits). The omelet itself had peppers, onion, bacon, ham, and cheese in it. And it was delish! With a little ketchup, it was amazing!!! I also got hot chocolate, and while the hot chocolate was pretty good (you get one free refill) the whipped cream they put on top of it is amazing. It's very thick, and is definetly not your typical Cool Whip (say it like Stewie Griffin). It was really rich, and amazing. I had to eat it with a spoon before I could get to the hot chocolate.

For the typical BSU student this meal is perfect. The menu is very cheap, I think we both ate for under $10 before tax, and you get a lot of good food for the price.

Introduction

Hello!

This is Dani and Andrew, two juniors at Ball State University. We have been living in Muncie going on three years now, and decided to create a blog of all the interesting places to go and things to do in Muncie, particularly  places to eat, since eating on campus gets pretty old.

This blog is functioning as a forum for us to let the world know what Muncie has to offer, and share the little-known places in Muncie to others who might enjoy them! We're going to enjoy our time blogging about everything in Muncie, and we hope you enjoy reading about them and check them out!
